COMMON USES:

Smaller, harder, and more pungent than English walnuts, black walnut is native to North America and cultivated throughout Europe, black walnut has been used as a food source for indigenous populations.  The hull without the meaty kernels inside are used in traditional medicine and can be infused, tinctured, encapsulated, or used as a fabric dye.  Care should be used when touching the raw product as it will most certainly dye your hands.  The tree produces a sap that discourages growth of competitive plants near the roots of the black walnut tree.  If the hulls are soaked in water then poured onto the ground, ground worms will rise to the surface and kill the worms due to its anti-parasitic effect.  The bark is effective at relieving toothache and the inner bark is a laxative, and the leaves, root, and bark contain juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4 naphthoquinone) and are used for deterring bedbugs and mites.  The husk is primarily used to kill candida and has been shown clinically to be more effective than some antifungal prescriptive drugs.
Topically, the juice or extract from black walnut is a strong anti-fungal agent and has shown activity against S. aureus and candida symptoms and has a moderate activity against gram-positive and acid-fast bacteria, as well as treating ringworm.  Studies have shown juglone potentially inhibits three key enzymes from Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori), a gram-negative bacterium which causes several human GI diseases.  Juglone has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the algae species of Anabaena variabilis and Anabaenoa flos-aquae.  Quinones have been associated with anti cancer activity, promotes the generation of hydrogen peroxide, and inhibits transcription in cancer cells.
